Autoclaves are used to sterilise equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam.

Typical loads include laboratory glassware, equipment, instruments and of course culture media. A growing area of autoclave usage is the pre-disposal treatment and sterilisation of waste material, such as pathogenic waste before final disposal.
